Which recessed spotlights are suitable for the bathroom?

In the bathroom, the placement of the spot is particularly important. The closer the spot is to the shower, bath, or sink, the better the protection against moisture must be. Therefore, when choosing bathroom recessed spotlights, always look at the IP rating.

For dry areas of the bathroom, a lower IP rating is often sufficient. Above or close to the shower, however, a better protected spot is needed. If you are unsure about the correct zone, it is better to choose a safer, higher IP rating or have the situation assessed by an installer.

Guideline per bathroom zone

  • Zone 0: in the bath or shower tray, usually at least IP67.
  • Zone 1: above the bath or shower up to 2.25 meters, usually at least IP65.
  • Zone 2: around the bath, shower and sink, often at least IP44.
  • Outside the wet zones: IP20 or IP21 can sometimes be sufficient, provided the spot does not come into direct contact with moisture.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to frequently asked questions about this collection.
What IP rating do I need in the bathroom?

That depends on the zone. In zone 1 (above bath or shower) IP65 is often the minimum requirement, in zone 2 (around bath, shower and washbasin) usually at least IP44. The spotlights in this collection have IP65 on the optical side.

Which recessed spotlights are in this collection?

In this collection, you will find the DONAR XS LED recessed spotlight in white, black, and grey. This is a compact downlight with a high-quality Philips LED module and IP65 on the optical side.

What does IP65 mean on the optical side?

This means that the visible front of the spotlight is protected against dust and jet water according to IP65. This makes the spotlight suitable for damp rooms such as the bathroom, provided it is installed according to the applicable zone requirements.

In which bathroom zone can I install these spotlights?

With IP65 on the optical side, these spotlights are suitable for the wetter zones of the bathroom. Always observe the applicable zone classification and, if in doubt, have the situation assessed by an installer.

Are these bathroom spotlights dimmable?

This depends on the chosen driver. Some versions are on/off, others are dimmable. Check the dimmability per product and variant.

Can I use these spotlights outside the bathroom as well?

Yes. Thanks to their excellent color rendering (CRI greater than 90) and professional light quality, these spotlights are also suitable for, for example, shops, corridors, entrances, and business premises.
